Ofcom proposes changes to the broadband supply change process to remove current problems
Following problems experienced by many users when they try and switch broadband suppliers Ofcom has proposed changes to make the process much easier.
When someone wants to switch broadband suppliers they need to obtain a Migration Authorisation Code (MAC) from their existing supplier first. This MAC is required to release the phone line, and before it is released it is not possible for another supplier to provide broadband services to that line.
Unfortunately, it is currently only a voluntary agreement that requires a MAC to be provided and some broadband suppliers are refusing to do so. This means that the supplier cannot be changed and often results in the loss of broadband services for days or weeks while the situation is resolved. The problem also occurs when a broadband user moves house to a property that has a phone line which is currently 'assigned' to an existing supplier.
If the new proposals are adopted it will mean that service providers will be legally obliged to provide a MAC when requested and should stop any of the existing problems.
