74,000 .eu internet domain names suspended

The EU body responsible for .eu internet domain names have suspended thousands to prevent warehousing.

Warehousing is the practice of registering domain names with the intention of selling them on at a later date. Under the regulations of EURid (the organisation responsible for .eu domain names) warehousing is not permitted.

It is believed that 74,000 .eu domain names have been purchased by three UK companies working as a front for a single group. Since domain names should only be registered for existing companies and not warehoused in this way EURid has suspended the affected domains.

The .eu domain was launched in December, 2005 for Europeans
