80% of new Spyware may not be detected by popular anti-Virus software
The Australian Computer Emergency Response Team (AusCERT) has said that the most popular anti-Virus programs are failing to recognise up to 80% of new malicious software.
This is a worrying announcement, with many of these anti-virus programs now claiming to be effective against Spyware and other malicious software. AusCERT is clear that the problem is not that the software is defective but is due to the fact that cyber-criminals are able to design threats that get around the protection provided by these tools.
No companies or software products have been names, however I have always maintained that the methods used by Spyware and other similar malicious software is completely different to that used by viruses. This may mean that anti-virus products just aren't set up to effectively detect these threats.
